Jackhammer!
By: John Buell
Referred to by many as the "Granddaddy of Extreme 4wheeling,"
Jackhammer has become the trail (in California at least) against which
all others are measured. Just like the rest of this new breed of extreme
trails scattered elsewhere throughout the South, Southwest and the Dakotas,
the difficulty of Jackhammer and it's sister trails, located in Johnson
Valley, California will redefine your definition of hardcore. These trails
make the Rubicon, (once considered the extreme) Fordyce Creek, Dusy and
other name trails on the California to-do hit list seem mild-mannered.
On Jackhammer, the easiest route is 5+ and there are no bypasses!
Jack starts out tough and really doesn't let up until you return
to the valley floor. Big rock falls, steep angles and a loose off-camber
climb with plenty of gut-grabbin' exposure leads you to the halfway mark
and a spectacular view. The remainder of the trail heads back down the
mountain with more Grande-size rocks and big drop-offs.
Lockers, low gears, big meats and a proper mind set are a must
on Jack. In fact, much like the fluid moves of a rock climber, the drivers
ability to link sections together may be the most important part of the
equation. Flowing smoothly from boulder to boulder defines the art of rock
dancing. The bash n' crash method only shows fear of defeat.
Be prepared to experience some possible "pinstripping by Jack"
as the trail gets extremely tight in places. Even with these tight quarters,
undoubtedly someone will drive a full-size through Jackhammer someday,
although it will certainly change the meaning of the term "used vehicle."
Yes, Jackhammer is extreme...extreme fun!
